John 5:46-53
46Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48"Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe."
49The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies."
50Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live."
The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, "The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour."
53Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and all his household believed.
INTRODUCTIONEveryone has human needs whether they are poor or rich and educated or uneducated. Jesus came to preach the Good News and met some of the needs of people around Him. Today, we are going to look at how Jesus met the need of the royal official and his household.
JESUS MET THE NEEDS OF OTHERS
46Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48"Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe."
49The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies."
50Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man took Jesus at his word and departed. John 4:46-50
We meet people who have countless needs as Jesus did. Let us be a church that meets the needs of our community accordingly. For example, a student who needs assistance with an assignment or is in need of friendship, a mother needing a baby-sitter, an unemployed person needing a job, a sick person needing medical treatment and prayer for healing or a non-believer needing to know and experience God’s love.
THE WHOLE HOUSEHOLD BELIEVED
51While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, "The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour." 53Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and all his household believed.John 4:51-53
The royal official placed his trust in the words of Jesus and headed home (John 4:50b-51). He met his servants on the way home with news of the son’s recovery. He discovered the healing took place the exact time Jesus gave the words (John 4:52-53). This miraculous event causes everyone in his family to believe in Jesus.
Jesus demonstrated that he is able to meet all types of need:
- The emotional need (potential lost of a son)
- The physical need (Jesus healed the son) and
- The spiritual need (household believe in God)
CONCLUSION
God desires the local church to be salt and light in this world. Let us go out into our community to share the gospel with words and acts of kindness.
What kind of needs do people around you have?
How can you and your care group meet those needs practically?
