WORSHIP
I was born into a Christian family, and was brought up to go to church every Sunday. You can say I was just a Sunday Christian and never had a close personal relationship with God. This went for about 16 years, and the turning point came when I was in college, doing my Cambridge ‘A’ Levels. I had just come out of a year-long romantic relationship with a non-Christian, and that relationship brought me even further away from God. Determined to start anew and get things right, I made a plan for a year of self-discovery and to renew my relationship with God before I could commit to another relationship again.
Not long after I had made this plan, I came to Brisbane to study. I was invited to attend Hope Brisbane Christian Church, and I remember my first experience was during their “Worship Night”. I was deeply moved by the atmosphere that night – it struck me deeply that the people who were worshipping that night had a real relationship with God; that they were so devoted to Him, and this reflected in how they worshipped God. The atmosphere was so full of love and adoration to God; not to mention the reverence that they had for God, to want to offer their whole lives to the purposes of God. And that was exactly what I wanted – to come to that point in my spiritual walk. That reverential fear of God, that showed not only in worship, but also in a lifestyle that exudes devotion to God. That night gave me deeper insight into worship, and how I lacked that kind of zeal in my worship to God. Captivated by the spirits of the people that night, I decided to plant myself into Hope Brisbane Christian Church.
I have been a member of Hope Brisbane Christian Church now for about 3 years, and I can say that I have grown much in my conviction and commitment to God in this time. I now know that worship is not only about the songs that we sing, but it is rather a lifestyle that honours God. I believe that the reason I stayed with the church is that it reflected that kind of lifestyle – it was not only preached, but it was also carried out. And that attitude towards God motivated me to pursue such a lifestyle of worship unto God.
