John 8:12
12When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
INTRODUCTION
The New Testament presents Jesus as the personification of light or divine illumination: “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). By understanding the light of life in this passage, we can help people see this light.
JESUS CHRIST IS THE LIGHT
12When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world.John 8:12a
In this passage, Jesus describes His function as the light (John 1:4, 9), the very revelation and truth of God, and the solution to the evil in mankind and the world.
Jesus plainly stated that those who rejected this divine light would bring judgment upon themselves (John 3:19-21), but whoever believes in Him will have eternal life (John 3:16). The word Jesus used for light is phos (foce), which means of truth and its knowledge.
Follow light, avoid darkness. Darkness is the absence of light. Darkness is associated with evil, bad luck, or affliction and ‘sin’ (Job 24: 13-17) which lead to death. Darkness symbolizes human ignorance of God’s will that leads to destruction. However, Jesus gives us Light. The Light that gives us hope, direction, security and purpose etc. Most important, through Jesus Christ, we are able to know and experience God’s love in our lives.
BRING THE LIGHT TO OTHERS
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12b
Darkness also describes the condition of those who have not yet seen the light concerning Jesus (Eph 5:14) and those who deliberately turn away from the light (John 3:19-20).
We are called “children of light” (Eph 5:8) and to be “the light of the world” (Matt 5:14-16). When we followed Christ, we have Christ guide our life so that we’ll never need to stumble in the darkness. As we experience the goodness of the light, we should bring this light to others so that they also can experience it.
However, sometimes we may hide our light by not explaining our light to others, ignoring the needs of others or being quiet when we should speak.
In evangelism, we can tell people of the good news of God’s love. We also can share about our testimony of what we experienced before we came to know Jesus Christ and the amazing things happened after we have Jesus as the light. Many people are researching for the light. They are waiting for us to bring the light to them.
CONCLUSION:
Let us bring the light to the world by sharing the love of God, Jesus Christ and Salvation to others. Remember that Jesus Christ is our source of light and we are called to bring the light to others.
How did Jesus shine His light to people?
How can we shine and not hide the light of life to people around us?
